Hot Lunch

The PAC Lunches are held once or twice a month and enjoyed by students and parents (who get the day off from sending their lunch kit)! Special thanks to Linda, Serina, Ben and Mona for all their help on during the recent PAC Lunch on April 27th!

Book Fair: A Huge Success!

The recent Scholastic Book Fair held in April was enjoyed by all and has given the school more than $1200 to put towards books to the A.R. Lord Elementary library and classrooms. Half of the monies have been spent already on new books and the remainder will be spent at a later date. 

This year each division's teachers were also allowed to select book/books up to a value of $15 which was funded by the scholastic promotional allowance. Additionally, grade seven volunteers were also allowed to select a book of upto $10.  Thank you to everyone for their participation and especially to all the volunteers and key parent organizers, Kelly and Linda!

As a parent/guardian of a child at Dr. A. R. Lord, you are part of the PAC! May is the time of our annual general meeting (AGM). At this meeting, we will be nominating and voting for positions on the PAC Executive. This includes the Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Communications, and At-Large positions. Any parent may stand for nomination for any of these positions!

Ultimate Frisbee for Intermediate Students

Ms. McCandless is starting to organize some Ultimate Frisbee clinics, practices, and exhibition games for our intermediate students this spring! Soon, a survey will come out to you, to help gauge interest and receive permission. We are so lucky to have TWO men's professional teams here in Vancouver - the Nighthawks and the Riptide. They participate in different North American leagues. Both of these amazing teams are generously willing to support our schools - stay tuned! For now, we have received these excellent offers:

District Parent Advisory Council Event: Monday April 25th

May 10th Collaborative Presentation and Discussion on Social Media 4 Parents

Teacher and A.R. Lord parent, Sara McGarry will be leading a collaborative session with a focus on participation, exchange of experiences and ideas related to Parenting in a Social Media environment. Objectives:

• To educate about safe online engagement.
• To view the landscape of social media sites and applications.
• To increase awareness of our children's social media presence.
• To provide strategies to keep our children safe.

This presentation is part of the BC Teacher's Federation Parent Presentation Series.

Marker Recycling for Earth Day This Week

Dr. A.R. Lord Elementary has been participating in a program to recycle used markers (any felt tip marker pens, sharpies, highlighters, etc.) over the school year.  We have collected almost 400 markers! With Earth day upon us, please bring in your used markers from home or work this week to the school. An orange collection bin is located in the downstairs hallway.
Next week they will be packaged up and sent to a facility that will turn them into alternative clean fuel.

Earth Day Activities at A.R. Lord

A.R. Lord Elementary school will be celebrating Earth Day this Friday, April 22nd. 

We will be having an Earth Day assembly at 11:00 am and from 3:00-4:00 pm, an after school event with seed planting, games and snacks.

We hope that family/caregivers can join us! 

Non-Instructional Days - Friday April 15 and Monday April 18

British Columbia’s curriculum for K-12 is being redesigned to respond to the demanding world our students are entering.  Transformation in curriculum will help teachers create learning environments that are both engaging and personalized for students. At the heart of British Columbia’s redesigned curriculum are core competencies, essential learning and literacy and numeracy foundations. This work has been years in the making with teachers, administrators and the Ministry of Education involved in its development and rollout and implementation of the new curriculum is underway.

 

Friday April 15th is the second day this year that has been designated for curriculum implementation time. This time has been set aside to provide for teachers to continue to familiarize themselves with the new curriculum and to plan for its full implementation in the coming years. This will enable our teachers to serve children better for the transition to the new curriculum. Schools will not be in session for students on Friday April 15th.

Monday April 18th is also a regular district wide professional day. School will be back in session on Tuesday April 19th.

Dr. Dodgeball In Action at A.R. Lord Elementary

Rules:

Step 1 Divide an equal number of players into two teams. Draw a separating line between the two teams with chalk, or mark the area with cones. Players may not cross the middle line or they will be out.

Step 2 Instruct both teams to choose a secret doctor. Meanwhile, place a set of dodgeballs on the dividing line of the playing area. Once both teams are ready, blow a whistle to begin the game. Players from both teams rush the line to collect the balls and begin throwing them at the opposite team's players.

Step 3 Sit down immediately if you are hit below the waist with a dodgeball. If the doctor touches your shoulder, you may resume play. If the doctor has been hit, you cannot resume play.

Step 4 Continue playing until at least one player is left standing. The team with the last standing player wins the game.

Long Range Facilities Plan Survey

The Vancouver School Board (VSB) is seeking your input on a Long Range Facilities Plan.  

What is a Long Range Facilities Plan or LRFP?  

• The Long Range Facilities Plan (LRFP) is a roadmap to manage, upgrade and maintain Vancouver’s schools to 2030.
• The LRFP will guide activities like building new schools, the seismic upgrading of current schools, moving students while their schools are being upgraded and possible school closures.

Why take this survey? 

• There are elements of the plan that may affect you, whether you are a student, parent or resident of Vancouver. 
• The Vancouver School Board will submit a final plan to the Ministry of Education by June 2016.
• Your input will help staff and elected trustees as they shape and finalize the plan.

BC School Fruit and Vegetable Nutrition Program

We are pleased to announce that in cooperation with the Ministries of Health, Education, and Agriculture, BC AITC and our program partners at the Overwaitea Food Group have created and issued a special informational brochure and coupon to A.R. Lord which is part of the BC School Fruit and Vegetable Nutritional Program. The brochure and coupon is being delivered to schools in celebration of the 10^th Anniversary of the Program.

Parents will find interesting facts, including healthy eating tips and a list of kids’ top 10 favourite healthy snack items provided through the Program over the years. The coupon for buy one get one free grape tomatoes and mini cucumbers is also accessible:   anniversary coupon.  This special product offer is valid at all Overwaitea Food Group stores until May 6^th (Save-On Foods, PriceSmart Foods, Overwaitea Foods, and Cooper’s Foods).

What are Student Led Conferences?

An opportunity for...

* students to develop organizational and oral communication skills
* parents, teachers, and students to engage in open and honest dialogue
* teachers to share any concerns they may be having about the student’s work habits, behaviour, or academic progress
* students to accept personal responsibility for their academic performance
* parents to gain a better understanding of their child’s classroom experiences
* teachers to facilitate a positive experience for both the child and the parent
* students to organize carefully chosen samples of their written work to show their parents
* students to evaluate their own learning and to set realistic goals 

Remember: Students will be dismissed Early at 2:00pm Wednesday April 6th and Thursday April 7th for Student Led Conferences.

Family Dance Tickets On Sale

What happens at a family dance.?...A good time for a good cause! Come and enjoy a night out with the family and support our school!
Tickets are on sale at the front office for the upcoming April 14th Family Dance.  Hand in your green forms (sent home last week)  to get your tickets and avoid missing out.  The evening includes a delicious catered Italian Dinner (Vegetarian options available) + the chance to dance with your kids (and show them how it's done!)
There will also be a silent auction with great items such as restaurant certificates, BBQ, hotel-accomodation stays, handcrafts etc.

Dancing Tutorial for Parents and Kids

Join in on a tutorial refresher for some fun dance moves (allemande left and do si do) this Friday April 8th from 3:00 - 4:00pm in the Gym in preparation to get your moves on  for the upcoming Family Dance! Parents, caregivers, and kids welcome! Principal Ms. Car and Music Teacher Ms. Young-Eng will be leading the tutorial.  

Scholastic Book Fair This Week

Our annual Scholastic Book Fair brings a pop-up book store right to our school library. Participation in the book fair provides a wonderful opportunity to encourage literacy and the pleasure of reading with students. All proceeds from the book fair will be used to purchase new books for our school’s library.
