Scholastic Book Fair Postponed

DreamRider Theatre: H2Whoa!

On Tuesday, all Dr. A. R. Lord students were treated to another great travelling theatre production: H2Whoa! by DreamRider Theatre.

DreamRider introduces the fundamentals of environmental awareness to school age children through the excitement of live theatre and multi-media.

In DreamRider Theatre's trademark zany and fun style, H2Whoa! teaches kids all about water, the water cycle, and how to conserve this precious resource that flows right through us.

Tennis XL is a local company whose goal is to introduce children to the game of tennis, and provide them with the skills to be physically active throughout their lives.

The Templeton Community School Team, who brings us our wonderful afterschool programs, has released its brochure for the 2012 Spring Break Camps! Programs run March 12-16 and March 19-23, from 9:00-2:45, with supervision until 3 pm.

Registration is $95 per week or $35 per day for day programs offered on Mondays, Wednesdays (second week only), and Fridays.

TOMATOES

Grown on a vine, botanically, a tomato is the ovary and seeds of a flowering plant. It is, in fact, a fruit.

There are around 7,500 tomato varieties grown for various purposes.

Tomatoes contain lycopene, which has been shown to improve the skin's ability to protect against harmful UV rays.

School Mural Part 2

Following up on the success of our Mural Project on the front of the school, your PAC has decided (with the encouragement of Sarah Gray, the Vice Principal) to embark on an even bigger mural. This will be on the wall under the covered area at the back of the school. To help make this a success, we need YOUR ideas. Although we have an umbrella theme, "Kids in Action", what we're looking for is as many ideas, from as many people, in as many different directions as possible. Your idea might be in word form, pictures cut out of a magazine/newspaper, a link to a webpage, or an image copied from the Internet.

We don't know where the "Great Inspiration" will come from but we're looking to everyone; staff, students and PAC parents, for great ideas to consider and include in this year's mural.

Did You Know?

Our students will participate in a number of special sports activities and presentations throughout the school year.

At A.R. Lord our students have already been visited by the Vancouver Giants and the Canadian Women’s Olympic Soccer Team.

Our students will also be participating in a number of special sports activities in addition to their regular curricular physical fitness programs.

All students will be enjoying golf lessons, a comprehensive tennis program and a week of gymnastics.

Keeping our students active helps them focus and learn and builds the foundation for a healthy future.

Bring Jars for Light Water Drums

Dr. A. R. Lord students have been invited to create an art installation for the upcoming Light Water Drums lantern festival at Hastings Park! Students have been asked to bring glass jars, but we will need additional ones as well. If you have any extra clean glass jars, with the labels removed, please bring them to the school and place them in the bin by the front door ASAP.

Also, if you have some time to spare during the week, please ask your child's teacher if they need volunteers to help with the lantern making.

Everyone in the community is invited to attend the event on Saturday, February 18.

Fizzical Fizzicks: Spaced Out!

All classes were treated to a special show on Wednesday morning at Dr. A. R. Lord. The travelling company "Fizzical Fizzicks" brought us a great show about astronomy, and especially our own solar system.

Plate spinning, juggling, and puppetry were just a few of the techniques used to keep the show interesting and informative!

Boulders!

We got our boulders!

A few parents at Dr. A. R. Lord have been working with the City of Vancouver and the Vancouver School Board since before Christmas to get some boulders placed on the school grounds as natural play structures. These boulders were extracted from underneath Nootka Street in a recent city sewers project.

Wednesday, the two work crews from the city and the VSB worked together to bring us three smooth, very play-worthy boulders! The area is currently roped off until the ground dries out a little from all of our recent rain.

Ready, Set, Learn!

Chinese dragons do not have wings, and are a symbol of power, strength, and good luck.

Coyote Safety

Coyotes have again been recently spotted in our neighbourhood. This is a fairly frequent occurrence at Dr. A. R. Lord, and it is important to educate ourselves and our children about coyotes.
Here is some information on how to deal with a coyote in an urban setting, from the Stanley Park Ecology Society's Co-existing With Coyotes program.

What should I do if I see a coyote?

Note the date, time of day and what the coyote was doing. Call in the information to our hotline (604-681-9453) or e-mail the CWC program at: coyotes@stanleyparkecology.ca. We keep a database of sightings in the Lower Mainland to help identify areas of increased coyote activity.

If the coyote is seen in a residential area encourage the coyote to keep moving by shouting and gesturing aggressively at it. Remove all attractants around your property: accessible garbage and compost, pet food left outside, rat and mice habitat (birdseed fallen from feeders often attracts rodents).

What should I do if a coyote approaches me?

If a coyote approaches, appear as large and threatening as possible. Make aggressive gestures (moving arms and legs), shout in a low voice, and throw rocks, sticks or objects. Never run; coyotes, like most canids, like to chase moving objects. Coyotes are naturally timid animals and will flee when confronted with aggression.

What should I do if the coyote keeps approaching me?

Continue to exaggerate the techniques listed above. Do not turn away or run. Maintain eye contact and move slowly toward a building or area of increased activity.

How can I prepare my child for potential coyote encounters?

Education is the key to preparedness. Children should be taught to Be Big (stand up and raise your arms in the air), Be Mean (sound angry, stomp your feet, and throw something at the coyote), Be Loud (yelling "Go Away Coyote" so people nearby will come help), and Never Run.

Any aggressiveness displayed by coyotes should be reported to the Ministry of Environment at 1-800-663-9453.

Why should I not feed coyotes?

A Fed Coyote is a Dead Coyote

Coyotes that are intentionally fed by people invariably lose their fear of humans and develop aggressive behaviour, having to be destroyed. In addition, human food does not meet the animal's seasonal nutritional needs. There is plenty of natural food around for wildlife in the city.

Feeding Coyotes is a Crime

Section 33.1 of the BC Wildlife Act provides a minimum $345.00 ticket and maximum $50,000 fine and six month prison sentence for anyone who "with the intent of attracting dangerous wildlife to any land or premises, provides, leaves or places in, or about the land or premises, food, food waste or any other substance that could attract dangerous wildlife to the land or premises.
If you suspect a neighbour is feeding coyotes you may print out an anonymous note to leave in your neighbour's mailboxes.

What should I do if I find an injured or sick coyote, or an abandoned pup?

People often see coyote pups and other wildlife babies alone in the spring. Before the animal is approached, it should first be observed for at least 24 hours to ensure the parent is not returning to take care of its young. Once you are certain it is orphaned contact your nearest wildlife rehabilitation centre. In the Lower Mainland residents can call the Wildlife Rescue Association of BC in Burnaby at 604-526-7275 or the Critter Care Wildlife Society in Langley at 604-530-2064.

Do not attempt to handle an adult coyote. Injured wild animals are frightened and in pain. In addition, adult coyotes are extremely difficult to catch so long as they have use of all four limbs. Instead call your local wildlife rehabilitation centre. For help with sick or injured adult coyotes in the Lower Mainland call the Critter Care Wildlife Society in Langley at 604-530-2064.

Did you know? We now have battery recycling available at Dr. A. R. Lord. Bring all your dead household batteries (NOT car batteries) to school and put them in the small brown bins near the office. Battery recycling programs in B.C. ensure that no part of the battery ends up in the landfill.

It is not safe to put dead batteries in with your regular garbage. They can leak toxic chemicals into the earth that end up in our water systems and elsewhere.

Winter Hot Lunch Dates

Hot lunch order forms will go home this week. The following hot lunch dates are planned for the winter:

February 24 - PIZZA

Hot lunch includes main, choice of milk or water, a fruit or vegetable and a dessert for $3.00. Extra helpings available.

Please note that no child will be refused a hot lunch due to lack of money. If you cannot pay for any reason, please submit your form without payment and your child will receive a hot lunch.

Forms are due back to the PAC box in the office by Monday, January 23 for all three lunch dates.

Division 5 is learning to paint like Emily Carr! Their end of the hallway has been brightened up by an Emily Carr-style mural of a brooding sky with West Coast conifers in the foreground. They employed painting techniques such as painting on the bristles only, leaving visible brush strokes and blending colours, by putting two colours on the brush at once.

MANDARIN ORANGES

Mandarin oranges are grown on small (10 ft high), slender-twigged deciduous trees.

The tree is more drought-tolerant than the fruit. The mandarin is tender, and is damaged easily by cold.

Compared to other citrus fruits, Mandarin oranges have 6 to 7 times the amount of “synephrine” a naturally occurring decongestant to help with flu season!

Apples are grown on deciduous trees (Malus domestica) which reach a height of 3 to 12 meters (9.8 to 39 ft).

Our students learn basic music theory and get to play a variety of musical instruments
Our students learn traditional dances like the Virginia Reel and the Pasodoble along with more contemporary moves like hip-hop and flash mob dances

Music and dance helps our students express themselves positively and connect with others. It benefits language and mathematical skills and their health.

Halloween Assembly

Our October 31st Halloween assembly was attended by spooks, ghouls, and many species of living creatures! Vice-Principal and temporary witch Mrs. Gray read some spooky Halloween stories, and all students who wished to display their costumes could walk across the stage. We were reminded of some ways to keep Halloween safe, and even treated to some Halloween safety rules set to music, performed by our older students, and composed by them in collaboration with their "buddies" in the younger grades.

Friday Pumpkin Patch

Despite threatening weather and bad traffic, DARLAA made Friday a special day for the students at Dr. A.R. Lord. The back lawn was transformed into a pumpkin patch, where each student chose their own pumpkin to take home. DARLAA volunteers stuck around all day to help the students with pumpkin carving, pumpkin stories, and even some special pumpkin math!

Garden Update

We've been busy in the garden this fall! Students have made a stir-fry, tasted many different herbs and vegetables, eaten arugula pesto, harvested beans, and planted garlic.

DARLAA Pumpkin Patch on Friday, October 28

DARLAA, the Dr. A.R. Lord Alumni Association, will be bringing a pumpkin patch to the city on Friday, October 28!

The DARLAA volunteers will be on site for the entire school day spending time with students and teachers. They will be setting up a fantastic Pumpkin Patch at the school with enough pumpkins for every student to be able to take one home. DARLAA volunteers will spend the rest of the day helping with pumpkin activities in the classrooms - decorating, carving and even some special pumpkin math!

Dr. A. R. Lord Elementary School is very lucky to have such dedicated and enthusiastic past students who are great role models and inspiration for the current student population.

Dr. A.R. Lord's Cross-Country Team had their final meet today at Trout Lake. The weather was better than we could have imagined and it was great to see our students' yellow jerseys and smiling faces among the many hundreds of participants attending from around the city.

Thanks to the students for such a great attitude and for attending morning practices, and an extra-special thanks to Ms. Burke and Ms. O'Neill for their time and dedication, and for making this possible for our students.

Performances At Our School

At Dr. A.R. Lord, our lucky students went to two performances this week.

On Wednesday, Parks Canada's Beaver Tales Theatre came to our school to present "Justine Beaver's Excellent Adventure". The play incorporates music and comedy into themes of the environment, ecosystems, and the outdoors, as well as Canadian history and geography.

On Friday, Green Thumb Theatre presented their play "Role Call". Role Call tells the story of three young actors dealing with issues around self esteem, peer pressure, and personal identity using humour and song.

Thanks to the actors from both companies for bringing this wonderful, diverse entertainment to all of our students!

Our students have been keeping active as fall arrives with several exciting running events.

On Wednesday September 28, all students participated in the 31st annual Terry Fox Run. Divisions 1-5 ran with other schools at Empire Bowl, while Divisions 6 and 7 ran in the schoolyard. Students have been bringing in a "Toonie for Terry" all week; funds go towards cancer research. They have also been learning about Terry Fox in class.

Also on Wednesday, our school's cross-country team participated in their first mini-meet at Clinton Park. Franklin, Maquinna, Garibaldi, Thunderbird, and Britannia schools were also there. The weather was beautiful and all runners received a ribbon to celebrate their accomplishments.

All classes are also currently "running across Canada". Students run during class time, and the distances are added up to take us right across the country! We are already ~~past Hope~~ close to Banff!

This Wednesday, students will receive sweet bell peppers in their classrooms.

SWEET BELL PEPPERS

Believe it or not, all bell pepper plants are red bell pepper plants. The difference? Time. Like tomatoes, peppers start out green, then gradually ripen to yellow, orange and then red.

Bell peppers originated in South America from wild seeds dating back thousands of years. Christopher Columbus discovered them on his travels to the "new world" and brought seeds back to Europe.

Just one red bell pepper gives you 100% of your daily dose of vitamins A, C, and E.

Practices take place Tuesday & Thursday mornings from 8:30 am to 9:00 am, rain or shine (in the gym if it is raining). BLUEBERRIES

Did you know that B.C. is the second highest producer of blueberries in the world? Blueberries are native to North America and were not introduced to Europe until the 1930's. Allergy Alert

Please note that there are no tree nuts allowed at Dr. A.R. Lord, due to a severe allergy of a Grade 1 student at the school. Tree nuts include cashews, hazelnuts, filberts, brazil nuts, macadamia nuts, walnuts, and pecans, among others. They are found in Nutella and other chocolate spreads, pesto, granola bars, cookies, trail mix, and many other snack foods. Please read the label before sending these foods to school with your children, and do not send these foods if they contain tree nuts.

Welcome to all new and returning families as we begin the 2011-2012 school year. It's exciting to be back!

This week, returning students have been placed in their 2010-2011 divisions until all the details are confirmed for us to move into new divisions. This will happen on Friday, September 9.

Kindergarten students will begin gradual entry on Monday, September 12. We're looking forward to seeing all the new faces around school. Welcome to our community!

School Garden

Dr. A.R. Lord now has a school vegetable garden! With the help of a grant from the Vancouver Foundation and many parent volunteers, an active garden exists on the southeast corner of the school property.

Its purpose is to give students the chance to learn how food grows and to plant something in the garden themselves. Many of the crops in the garden will be harvested in the winter, while school is in session, so an emphasis was placed on hardier crops such as leeks, broccoli, carrots, and collard greens.

Groundbreaking was on June 5 at our work bee, where past, present and future A.R. Lord families came out to help. So far, two divisions have come to the garden during class time to plant.

Fruit and Vegetable Program Review

The fruit and vegetable program has wrapped up for the year – and what a successful first year it was!

The students learned about healthy eating and the benefits of eating more fruit and vegetables through this new program to our school.

Teachers incorporated the food of the week into their curriculums and taught students about the specific health benefits of each one.

Students ate cucumbers, strawberries, peppers, blueberries, apples and pears to name just a few. Many students sampled foods that they had never tried before – and loved them.

Our program gave each student a full serving of mostly locally-grown, organic produce in a classroom setting (and sometimes even an extra serving at lunch the next day).

What a great new program to have at our school and we are looking forward to continuing it in the 2011/2012 school year.

Vice Principal's Letter

Dear Families,

As we approach summer break, it is time to reflect on a very positive and successful school year at Lord.

Every year, we have some changes to our staffing at school. This year, we will be saying good bye to Mrs. Wong, Mr. Campbell and Cheryl.

Mrs. Wong has been an outstanding intermediate teacher at Lord for many years. Her strengths and personal commitment to providing enriching experiences for her classes are well known – this year was no exception as the students in division one can confirm. Her contribution to the education of hundreds of students is exemplary. We wish Mrs. Wong all the very best as she enters a new phase of her life with her family.

Mr. Campbell has worked with many students over the past 2 years in his various roles – teacher librarian, grade 6/7 teacher and grade ¾ teacher. We have been very fortunate to have had Mr. Campbell at Lord as long as we did. His energy, leadership, and joy of teaching have made a very positive impact on many students. Many students have come to really admire Mr. Campbell. Mr. Campbell will be working at another school in Vancouver and those students are very fortunate.

Cheryl will be working at another Vancouver school in the fall. Cheryl has been working in the office at Lord for 14 years. Cheryl’s friendly, warm nature at the front desk has served all of us well. We will miss you, Cheryl and we wish you the very best at your new school.

We also have a number of students leaving the Lord community, going to new schools in September. I wish you well as you continue to learn and grow over the years ahead. Keep in touch with your good friends from Lord! To our grade 7 students – you will be a wonderful addition to the grade 8 group at Templeton, Burnaby North or whichever school you are planning to go to. You have been an amazing group of students – great role models, infectiously fun and positive. It has been a pleasure working with you this year and I know the teachers all feel the same.

I wish you a wonderful summer – enjoy the warmer weather and spending time as a family. Read books together and do some fun family outings – even a picnic at the park is a way to reconnect and allow yourselves time to relax. All the very best to all of our families and staff!

FIRST WEEK
Grade 1-7 students return to their 2010-11 classrooms.
New Kindergarten students will be given a schedule on the first day of school.

The school organization for 2011-12 is in draft form, only to become final in the first 2 weeks of September. For the first week, all students return to their 2010-11 classrooms. Division 1 (previous grade 6 students) will join Mrs. Lau for the first week.

On Friday of the first week, we hope to move students into their new divisions during the day. Teachers will facilitate the move, as per previous years. Parents will be informed of their childen's new classroom location.

Do you have summer plans that will mean your child will come back late in September? If so, the school can hold a spot for you – please let the office know as soon as possible. There is a ‘Late Return’ form for you to complete so the school has the information on record.

Yale Fundraiser for the Templeton Educational Foundation

Scholarship Fundraiser at The Yale

Sunday, June 19th 5-9pm

The Templeton Secondary School Educational Foundation is hosting a fundraiser on June 19th at The Yale in downtown Vancouver between 5 & 9pm. There will be live music from The Ponderosas, Michael Van Eyes, Nightbus, Deep Seated, Brickhouse and Johnny Ferrera. We have lots of door prizes and great items to raffle.

All proceeds will go to the Templeton Secondary School Educational Foundation. As many of our students go on to Templeton Secondary, the PAC would like to support this event.

About the Templeton Secondary Educational Foundation

The Foundation was founded in 1991 by a group of Templeton alumni to provide bursaries and mentoring to Templeton Secondary School graduates attending post-secondary institutions. Recipients are chosen based on financial need, scholastic achievement, community service and their commitment to their plan of studies. The Foundation’s endowment is administered by the Vancouver Foundation. Since 1991 the Foundation has awarded bursaries in excess of $692,000 to over 260 Templeton graduates.

Hot Lunch Friday June 10

The last hot lunch of the year is coming up on Friday, June 10th. Students have the opportunity to pay only $3.00 for their choice of a pepperoni or cheese pizza slice, accompanied by fresh fruit, a cup of milk and dessert. Additional pizza slices can be ordered for $1.50 each.

Order form notices were sent home on May 31st. Please contact your teacher or the PAC if you missed the notice and would still like your child to participate. Forms and payment should be returned to your child's teacher by Monday, June 6th.

Summer Rec & Read

Grade 1 – 4 students are eligible for a four week rec and read program being held at Hastings Elementary School during the month of July, Monday – Thursday, 9:00am-2:45pm each day.

The goal of the program is to give students more time to work on literacy skills. The morning is held in a classroom with a focus on reading. The afternoon session is a variety of sports and physical activities. Registration is first come, first served and space is limited.
