Grade 3/4 Update

Mrs. Bains' class has just finished writing reports on Canadian Animals, which are displayed outside their classroom. Please take a look! During the project the students learned to take notes, write sentences from those notes and then typed and illustrated their work. They created amazing reports!

The class has also been busy practicing for the school Christmas concert. They are excited to perform for their parents and friends!

As part of the holiday festivities they will also be visiting Burnaby Village Museum's Heritage Christmas.

What a great term it's been for the Grade 3 and 4 students!

An Orchestral Experience

On Thursday, November 25th, Divisions 1 and 3 braved the intense snow to visit the beautiful Orpheum Theatre to see the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

The students loved the inside of the Orpheum, with its gorgeous painted ceilings, sparkling chandeliers and carved golden walls. They said they felt like they were kings or queens in a palace.

The music was fantastic and the students enjoyed listening for their favourite piece. The classes are excited to be able to play Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" on their recorders!

The group had a wonderful time and would like to thank the brave parents who came with them in the snow to make this field trip possible.

Fruit & Vegetable Program

This week the students will receive another delivery from the BC School Fruit & Vegetable Nutritional Program.

  • For further information, fascinating facts and interesting history on this delicious fruit please read the PDF document on MANDARIN ORANGES.

Students will receive their delivery during class time on Wednesday. This snack is not meant to replace the foods students normally eat at school. Students can make their own decisions on whether to taste the fruits offered.

    ARTS UMBRELLA

Arts Umbrella, a not-for-profit arts education centre for children and youth, will be at Lord working with most classes on a fantastic drama program for the next week. This is a wonderful experience for students to learn and have fun with an expert!

Numerous studies indicate that people who receive arts education early in life reap many tangible, long-term, life-changing benefits. From enhanced critical thinking, improved self-esteem and ability to collaborate, to improved scores in math and science, children gain skills that can help them well into adulthood.

Arts Umbrella will return in February and March to provide our students with another wonderful art program. We are very fortunate to have this opportunity for students within the regular classroom schedule.

For more information about this program at Lord, please contact the school at 604-713-6420.

    Hot Lunch Update

Thank you to our PAC for organizing another successful Hot Lunch Day on Thursday, November 25th! Students enjoyed a well-balanced lunch of pizza, fruit and a tasty treat. Many thanks to parent volunteer Linda D who worked tirelessly to coordinate all the orders and ensured that there was pizza for all!

    FOOD BANK DONATIONS

Ms. Young-Eng, Ms. Poletti and Mrs. Gray are coordinating a Food Bank Drive with the Student Council. They are collecting food for those in need until DECEMBER 10TH. They are asking students and families to contribute at least 3 items each, if possible.

Thank you again for thinking of those in need, and demonstrating to the children in our school how important it is to take care of others! For more information please contact the school at 604-713-4620.

    Read to Succeed

The Vancouver Giants Read to Succeed Program was launched on Tuesday, November 23rd for all students. Giants players Connor Redmond and Dalton Reum, along with Coach Chad Scharff, came to Lord to speak to students and staff.

These young men explained the Read to Succeed Program and provided each student with a special Passport. Students are encouraged to meet the challenge over the next 2 weeks! Each student has been challenged to complete 15 minutes of reading and 30 minutes of physical activity every day (outside of school time).

Students are to keep a log, recording the details in the passport, and have a parent initial the passport each day. On December 8th reps from the Vancouver Giants will return to school to see how our students managed with the challenge, and provide complimentary hockey tickets to successful participants.

Please help your child with the terrific program - perhaps it will be a chance to establish some new, healthy habits for the whole family!
For more information on this healthy program please contact the School at 604-713-4620.

    Vice-Principal's Message

    Dear Families,

This has been a busy and exciting fall at Dr. A.R. Lord Elementary School. Students have been working on a number of projects, assignments and lessons in the classrooms for their academic growth. The library has been well utilized with children borrowing books each week. Classes go to the gym often, if not every day, for a variety of games, dances and sports. We are also all working on plans for the upcoming Winter Concert.
Through the year we try to offer a variety of learning experiences to balance academic, social, emotional, artistic and athletic opportunities at school. As the holiday season approaches life at school seems to pick up, building momentum until the winter break.
Once again there are many positive initiatives at school to share with you, so you can mark your calendar and talk to your child about some of the special activities happening at Lord.

    Yours truly,
    Sarah Gray
    Vice-Principal

    We Day for Grade 6/7's

Sixteen Div. 1 students were randomly chosen to attend WeDay along with pupils from all over B.C.

WeDay is a day-long event that initates a year-long program for change, called We Schools in Action. In cities all across Canada, the event brings inspirational speeches and performances to young leaders. Students then bring that energy home to take action on local and international issues all year long.

Our students were inspired by Craig Kielburger's testimony about how he, at the age of twelve, responded to a news-article on child labour by starting an organization called Free the Children. Fifteen years later the organization educates youth about poverty, exploitation and diseases in third world countries, and empowers them to raise funds to help. Monies can be used various ways from building schools and rain catchment systems to providing mobile health clinics.

The Dr. A.R. Lord students heard from global leaders such as Al Gore, Rick Hansen, Rev. Jesse Jackson and Martin Sheen speak about freedom, social justice, and global change. They also heard about how kids from all over the Lower Mainland made a difference by raising money or volunteering their time. There is power in today's youth to change the world.

The following are excerpts from our students about the day:
“I can't believe how a class of 12 year olds could ever achieve something this big.” (Mark)
“I love how we did the mob dance with 18,000 people in the stadium.” (Cindy)
“My favorite parts were listening to Hedly and The Bare Naked Ladies sing live. Hedly helped change the community of Maasai Mara by purchasing a goat to give to a family and by helping to build a school for the local youth.” (Jason, Brenda, Christain and Teresa.)
“There are many people hungry, so don't waste food.” (Mabel)
“Some children don't have an education and must walk miles for water.” (Ginny)
“Drought and poverty affect people in many parts of the world.” (Jason)
“WeDay taught me how one person can change the world. If one works hard, the goal is always achievable.” (Brian)

    Corn-tastic!

What a fantastic afternoon! It was great to see so many students and their families come out to get to know each other and our wonderful staff.

Delicious farm-fresh corn, tasty burgers and sausages, lots of families and staff, plus a whole bunch of sunshine made A.R. Lord's annual Welcome Back Corn Roast a success!!

During the roast the grade 7's worked hard fundraising for their graduating class with a great 50/50 draw. Congratulations to Tracy S. for winning the draw! Tracy generously chose to donate the funds back to the grade 7 class.

Of course lots and lots of hard work went into organizing and running this event and we want to send out thanks to everyone who pitched in to help. To Sean R. for driving out to the valley to pick up the hundreds of corn, to the Real Parents group for shucking and handing out the corn, to all the parents and staff who helped on the hot grills, organizing and handing out food, selling tickets and all the clean up.

A very special thank you to our PAC Chair, Kathy M, for doing so much of the heavy preparations and running of this event - great job!!!

We'd also like to thank Columbus Meat Market for donating all the tasty beef burgers, chicken burgers, and sausages. We're such a lucky school!

    And the Year is Done!

Well, it's been quite a fun and exciting year for our wonderful neighbourhood school!

There were so many amazing projects and events this year - the staff, students and families should be incredibly proud of all they accomplished!

Recorder festivals, track meets, science shows, raising butterflies and salmon, family movie nights, the 1st annual walk-a-thon, the Olympic concert, fields trips to Hastings Park and the Serpentine Wildlife Area, Sports Day, and the year-end BBQ’s – and these are only a portion of all the fantastic things our kids got to do this year at Dr. A.R. Lord Elementary School.

In the fall, our kids will start another great year – welcoming a new group of Kindergarten students, a new Vice Principal and having all students together in the Lillooet Building. Next year will also see some exciting new programs for our school. We are thrilled to announce the school has been accepted as part of the BC Fruit & Vegetable Nutritional Program. Students and school staff will receive a fresh, locally grown fruit or vegetable snack weekly, free of charge. The PAC is also looking forward to installing a community garden and hopes to implement a school milk program. We will be hosting more fun family movie nights, community BBQ’s and many other projects to support our teachers and children.

On behalf of the Parent Advisory Committee, we’d like to wish everyone a relaxing, sunny and fun summer. We’ll see you all on Tuesday, September 7th!

    Hastings Park/PNE City Planning

The City of Vancouver is currently undertaking a Master Plan and consultation process to guide the long range redevelopment of Hastings Park and the PNE. The plan will re-think Hastings Park and the PNE as a greener, more active, year-round destination, one that is better connected to the waterfront and surrounding community. Renewal ideas for the annual Fair and Playland are also key parts of the plan.

    Upcoming Open Houses
The City is committed to hearing from residents of Vancouver their thoughts and responses to the ideas and plans that are developed for Hastings Park. This feedback has been gathered in many ways and the consultation process will be on-going for the duration of the Master Plan process. Information gathered at open houses will help inform the Master Plan process ensuring that it reflects the needs ands aspirations of City residents.

Visit one of the following open houses to review concept plans and give your feedback. Input from these open houses will help guide the final completion of the Master Plan which will be considered by City Council this fall.
