1 to 1 Reading
At A.R. Lord School we are lucky to have 5 volunteers that work on reading skills one to one with our students. These are volunteers from the larger community; they do not have children in the school themselves. They are great role models and foster a love of literature and confidence in the young students they work with. They give much of their time helping individuals have even more success with reading.
These volunteers have been trained by the One to One Literacy Program and are coordinated by our Resource Teacher, Ms. Poletti. This is a wonderful program and we thank the volunteers for their commitment to our students. We are all very proud of the achievements of our young readers!

Volleyball Update
In November and December Mrs. Burke and Mrs. O'Neill coached the senior boys and senior girls volleyball teams. The teams practiced twice a week and had a series of games each week at Begbie Elementary School, playing against other teams from nearby schools.
A big thank you goes to the coaches for sharing their time, skill and love of the sport. The teams are to be commended for their commitment to improving and their team spirit! Congratulations to all volleyball players!

Vice Principal's Letter
Dear Families,
Happy New Year! As we settle into the winter term, many classes are working on goal setting exercises. As a school our goals for this year were determined last spring. Over the coming months we will revisit our school goals to determine if we are on track to achieving them and looking ahead to articulate goals for next year.
I wish everyone all the best as they work on their new year's goals, both in the school and at home.
Sincerely,
Sarah Gray
Vice Principal

School MissionIn addition, we have a school Code of Conduct. A few key points are read over the P.A. each morning as part of the announcements.
To develop a safe and positive school environment, with creative and challenging learning experiences for all students to achieve their potential.
School Goal
To continue to promote healthy and ethical living, improve students' physical fitness and nutrition, within the context of larger environmental concerns.
At Lord, we can all work together to Create Peace, Be Kind, Be Safe and Be
Respectful.
I wish everyone all the best as they work on their new year's goals, both in the school and at home.

Fruit and Vegetable Program
This week the students will receive another delivery from the BC School Fruit & Vegetable Nutritional Program.
PEARS
A pear is a fruit that varies from apple-shaped to teardrop-shaped. Its skin colour ranges from green and light yellow to red and brown. If you pull on the stem and it comes out easily, the pear is ripe.
For further information, fascinating facts and interesting history on this delicious fruit please read the PDF document on PEARS.
Students will receive their delivery during class time on Wednesday. This snack is not meant to replace the foods students normally eat at school. Students can make their own decisions on whether to taste the fruits offered.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the PAC or the school administration at 604-713-4620.

Cash Card Fundraiser
Forms Due: Jan 14th
Card Pickup: Jan 24th
We are excited to introduce a great Fundraising Campaign. This campaign is a little different - it will not cost you any more money than you would normally spend for your family!
The PAC will sell 'gift cards' from large, well known retailers. You can buy them to use in your daily purchasing, just as you would use cash, or use them as gifts for friends and family. Funds raised will be put towards supporting the school, purchasing supplies, special projects and events.
If families are willing to pre-purchase gift cards for their normal household items from participating retailers, the school will earn from 1-10% of the face value of the gift cards. Eg. If you order a $100 gift card for groceries, that pays a 3% commission, the PAC will raise $3 and you will receive the full $100 dollar value in groceries.
How the Program Works
1. You will be supplied with an order form (translation).
2. Determine which cards you would like to purchase in what denominations.
3. Return the completed order form in an envelope with a cheque payable to Dr. A.R. Lord PAC
4. Pick up your order within one week of order placement.
Orders will be available for pickup prior to the Lunar New Year so put in your order for gifts, or plan to purchase your groceries for the festivities with gift cards.
We hope to offer this program on a regular basis. Let’s all participate by just pre-planning our regular household purchases at retailers offering to support our school.
If you have any questions or did not receive an order form please contact the PAC Executive or speak to a Class Parent.
