School Thank You to the PAC

In March, the PAC decided to donate $75 to each division as part of the fundraising efforts through the hot lunches. Thank you to all of the parents involved in making that possible, especially to Sherri R who has been leading the charge with the hot lunches for the second half of this school year. The time spent coordinating the food orders, cooking all of those meals and setting the place mats out for each student is very much appreciated!

Division 6

The little ones have been learning Yoga. Each student helped to demonstrate a few of the poses they have been practicing at our recent school assembly; Shark, Dog, Table and Doll. Yoga is a great way to be active yet it is also a strategy to learn how to be calm!

Division 4

Measurement comes to life! Students have been learning to make realistic estimates of lengths and check for accuracy with a meter stick and then compare the two values.

They have also investigated the relationship between different tools that are not typically used for measuring. For example, did you know that it would take 120 million paper clips, end to end, to stretch across Canada?!?

Division 2

Pysanky eggs! Students worked with guest artists to create their own original and authentic pysanky egg, true to the form and style of this traditional Ukranian art form. Please come and see their beautiful creations on display next to the main office.

Vice Principal's Letter

Dear Families,

Have you been in the building recently and noticed the beautiful art work throughout the halls? Six of the classes were invited to create art with artists from Arts Umbrella earlier this month. The pictures that each student made are large paintings of animals ~ turtles, hippos, fish, giraffes, mice, rhinos, whales…please come in and see for yourself…they are amazing!

Our school has been very fortunate to have had Mr. Dykstra working with division 4 part time over the last few months. Mr. D. has been calm, thoughtful and engaging. He has planned and taught a variety of hands on lessons and made a wonderful impact on the school year here at Lord. Students in division 4 shared some of their learning at a recent school assembly - ways to estimate and measure both traditionally and with unusual measuring instruments. Thank you, Mr. D. for all you have done at Lord! Everyone has appreciated the extra effort Mr. D. has put into making his time with the students meaningful. We hope to see Mr. D. back at our school again...until then, we wish Mr. D. all the very best with his work with other students in Vancouver.

Mr. Campbell will be teaching division 4 on Thursdays and Fridays after the spring break. Welcome to division 4, Mr. Campbell!

This week, report cards went home and you will have had an opportunity to come in for conferences. This is a good time to reflect on and celebrate your child's strengths and accomplishments as well as discuss goals and areas of focus for the remaining few months of this school year. Intermediate report card achievements will be recognized at an upcoming school assembly. Students who achieve Honour Roll, Principal's List or Super G will be asked to stand up for a round of applause in congratulations on their fine work.

Spring break is two weeks this year. When we return, the Heart and Stroke fundraiser will kick off officially on Thursday, April 7 with an assembly. Packages for the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser are going home with students this week to give everyone a chance to collect donations or pledges over the break. I know that students will strive yet again to do their very best with this skipping and fundraising event as they do with the many endeavours undertaking in the school.

I wish you all well over the time off and look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday, April 4.

Sincerely,

Sarah Gray
Vice Principal

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

We are happy to announce that it is time once again for our school’s annual Scholastic Book Fair. Participation in the book fair provides a wonderful opportunity to encourage literacy and the pleasure of reading with students. All proceeds from the book fair will be used to purchase new books for our school’s library.

Location
School Library

Dates
March 16, 8:30-9:00 am, 2:00-4:00 pm
March 17, 8:30-9:00 am, 3:00-4:00 pm
March 18, 8:30-9:00 am, 3:00-4:00 pm

Sales of $1500-$3000 allow the school to take 50% of the total profits to purchase new books. Sales under $1500 allow the school to take 25% of the total profits to purchase new books. Last year our school made $1363 in sales and in 2009 our school made $1600 in sales.

It is our school’s goal to sell at least $1500 in books so that we can take advantage of the 50% return. Please think of the book fair as a great place to buy birthday presents, early Christmas presents, etc. A chart will be posted near the office so everyone can follow our school’s progress.

This year, the book fair will also feature a special preschool module with books that are great for preschoolers. We know there are lots of little brothers and sisters who will enjoy these books.

PRIZE DRAW
All purchases made by families of the school on Wednesday and Thursday of the book fair will entitle the purchasers to enter a draw to win $25 worth of books for that student and $25 worth of books for that student’s teacher. Families buying books for more than one child will be given an entry ticket for each child. The draw will be done on Friday, March 18th so that the student can come to the library and select their prize books. Purchases made on the Friday will not be eligible for the draw.

In addition, all students of Dr. A.R. Lord will be entered in a draw to win a book. On the last day of the book fair, one student from each division will win a pre-selected book from the fair.

Please note: If there is a book at the book fair that has sold out, payment can be made for that book and then that book will be delivered to the school after the book fair has ended (after spring break).

The book fair will accept cash, cheque and mastercard/visa payments.

We are very excited about the fair and can’t wait to see everyone there!

Sincerely,
Dr. A. R. Lord Parents Advisory Council

Division 7

Salmon in the classroom! The K and grade 1 students are learning first hand about the life cycle of salmon and even have a tank full of eggs in the classroom right now. Soon, the eggs will hatch into alevins!

Division 6

These K and grade 1 students are busy each day with reading, writing, counting, adding, singing, poems and centres. They are also learning about the importance of kindness and caring to be a good friend, problem solving peacefully and sharing.

Division 5

More great things are happening with Mrs. Watson, Mrs. Burke and the division 5 students. They are reading to themselves for over 20 minutes now, writing more elaborate and detailed stories and journals plus they have recently wrapped up an extended study of the Fin’s Friends program about respect and responsibility.

Division 4

The students in division 4 enjoyed a great field trip to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta to learn about BC waterfowl. What an exciting and perfect day – the sun was shining bright for this trip which was a welcome change in February for all!

Teacher Update – Mr. Campbell will be joining the grade ¾ class after the March Spring Break. Mr. D. will continue to work with the students on Thursdays and Fridays until the switch. We apologize for the delay in the transition but know it is worth the wait!
