Friday Pumpkin Patch

Despite threatening weather and bad traffic, DARLAA made Friday a special day for the students at Dr. A.R. Lord.  The back lawn was transformed into a pumpkin patch, where each student chose their own pumpkin to take home.  DARLAA volunteers stuck around all day to help the students with pumpkin carving, pumpkin stories, and even some special pumpkin math!

Garden Update

leeks in the garden

We've been busy in the garden this fall!  Students have made a stir-fry, tasted many different herbs and vegetables, eaten arugula pesto, harvested beans, and planted garlic.

More activities will continue throughout the fall and winter, as the garden is still full of winter sprouting broccoli, collard greens, and leeks.

Thanks to Ms. Watson and Ms. Young for continuing to bring their classes into the garden, soon to be joined by Ms. Andersen.

DARLAA Pumpkin Patch on Friday, October 28

DARLAA, the Dr. A.R. Lord Alumni Association, will be bringing a pumpkin patch to the city on Friday, October 28!

The DARLAA volunteers will be on site for the entire school day spending time with students and teachers. They will be setting up a fantastic Pumpkin Patch at the school with enough pumpkins for every student to be able to take one home. DARLAA volunteers will spend the rest of the day helping with pumpkin activities in the classrooms - decorating, carving and even some special pumpkin math!

Dr. A. R. Lord Elementary School is very lucky to have such dedicated and enthusiastic past students who are great role models and inspiration for the current student population.

Thanks for A Great Cross-Country Season!

Dr. A.R. Lord's Cross-Country Team had their final meet today at Trout Lake.  The weather was better than we could have imagined and it was great to see our students' yellow jerseys and smiling faces among the many hundreds of participants attending from around the city.

Thanks to the students for such a great attitude and for attending morning practices, and an extra-special thanks to Ms. Burke and Ms. O'Neill for their time and dedication, and for making this possible for our students.

Fruit & Vegetable Program

This week the students will receive another delivery from the BC School Fruit & Vegetable Nutritional Program.

CARROTS

  • Carrots grow in the ground.
  • The root is the part we eat, it grows downwards into the soil and swells.
  • Carrots come in many sizes and shapes: round, cylindrical, fat, very small, long or thin.
  • Carrots are the second most popular vegetable in the world, next to the potato.
  • Carrots truly do improve eyesight.

For further information, fascinating facts and interesting history on this crunchy vegetable please read the PDF document on CARROTS.

  • Students will receive their carrots during class time on Wednesday. This snack is not meant to replace the foods students normally eat at school. Students can make their own decisions on whether to taste the vegetables offered.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the PAC at arlordpac@gmail.com or contact the school administration at 604-713-4620.

    Performances At Our School

At Dr. A.R. Lord, our lucky students went to two performances this week.

On Wednesday, Parks Canada's Beaver Tales Theatre came to our school to present "Justine Beaver's Excellent Adventure".  The play incorporates music and comedy into themes of the environment, ecosystems, and the outdoors, as well as Canadian history and geography.

On Friday, Green Thumb Theatre presented their play "Role Call".  Role Call tells the story of three young actors dealing with issues around self esteem, peer pressure, and personal identity using humour and song.

Thanks to the actors from both companies for bringing this wonderful, diverse entertainment to all of our students!
