Hastings Community Association Open House Saturday, April 13
Remember the open house at Hastings Community Centre this Saturday from 11-2. There will be lots of children's activities and information about the programs that the Hastings Community Association has made possible over the years. See below the pic for more information.
Please join us this coming Saturday, April 13, from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm, for our very special 75th Anniversary Celebration of the Hastings Community Association, which has been an integral component in the vibrant neighbourhood of Hastings Sunrise since the Association was established in the early 1930's!
Hastings Community Association has had the interests of the local citizens at heart since its creation. Their focus has been to help ensure that all citizens in the community, young and old, have been able to access “healthy alternative outlets for their energy and boredom”. Tennis, lawn bowling, swimming, and lacrosse are examples of the outdoor activities supported in the past, many of which remain to this day. They have been joined through the years by others such as the relatively new Exceleration Tri-Club, Hastings Community Little League which has been operating since 1953, soccer for kids and badminton, to name a few. In the past, indoor activities abounded, ranging from rousing games of whist, gymnastics, and social clubs to various Committees including Ladies, Commerce, Athletic and Publicity. Their work continues to be important today, albeit perhaps with 21st century titles! Nowadays, the activities also include the Hastings Centre Rockhounds club, which has been active for almost fifty years, ballroom and belly dancing, Chinese classical dance, Hip-Hop, jive, basketball, crafts, drumming, community kitchen, Zumba, BootCamp, Tai Chi, the list is endless, something for everyone!
This exciting event will be an Open House, featuring a self-guided tour of the Hastings Community Centre, with the opportunity to see demonstrations of various programs offered at the centre, including gardening, baking, cooking, yoga, music, dance, and art. Sample treats created by our Seasons of Food participants, bring home a plant from our Teaching Garden, have your little one dig for fossils at the Family Drop-in! There will be various forms of dance performances to enjoy, ranging from line dancing to break dancing! Explore the fun and interesting activities available here, learn about the great programs at Templeton Park Pool including the renowned Exceleration Tri Club, learn about the natural beauty of The Sanctuary across the street in Hastings Park and check out our excellent Licensed Preschool and the fantastic Fitness Centre! There will be ball sports in the gym for kids young and old, the beloved Parent & Tot gym will be free, and so will be the coffee & tea served up by the seniors, along with the 75th Anniversary Cake! There will be awesome and interesting history to browse through in the Board Room, along with representatives from the Association Board to meet and chat with. Door prizes, activity passport, childminding, fun games led by the Hastings Centre Rockhounds and a BBQ tent with proceeds going towards youth initiatives; so much to see, do and enjoy. Don't miss out the opportunity to discover the great community spirit and activities that help make our special corner of Vancouver so great!

Before and After-School Care at Dr. A. R. Lord
As we work toward getting childcare at our school we are asking families to take the time to write to our elected trustees at the Vancouver School Board. The more letters, the more pressure on the board to assist us in finding an appropriate space at our school. You don’t have to write a long letter or an eloquent one. Just let the trustees know that this is something our school needs. VSB facilities will be back at our school in the upcoming weeks to once again review our space and trustees should have our letters prior to this visit.
Our school board trustees' e-mail addresses are: ken.clement@vsb.bc.ca, patti.bacchus@vsb.bc.ca, allan.wong@vsb.bc.ca, ken.denike@vsb.bc.ca, mike.lombardi@vsb.bc.ca, cherie.payne@vsb.bc.ca, rob.wynen@vsb.bc.ca, sophia.woo@vsb.bc.ca, fraser.ballantyne@vsb.bc.ca
