SUMMER NIGHTS - GATHERING AT DR. A.R. LORD

On any given warm summer night after dinner, head on over to the playground and you'll often find other Dr. A.R. Lord families, students and neighbours gathering at the school.

Informal games of soccer, biking, grounders or tag for the kids are in progress and the unstructured play is great for the imagination, staying active and getting out of the house.

Parents and caregivers also congregate for some social time, discussing events, politics, and the challenges of being a parent.

So stroll down to our school playground and join in on the summer fun!!!  Be active.  Be Part of the AR Lord Community!

Dr. A.R. Lord part of the vibrant Hastings Sunrise Neighborhood

Dr. A.R. Lord Elementary School sits in the family friendly Hastings Sunrise area and close to the East Village shops, restaurants, business' and services.  This little East Van school is thriving and participation in our school, community, and neighbourhood has the feeling of a small town in a big city.

We know and watch out for our neighbours, come together and are active in our community.  We often partner with local stakeholders, the Hastings Community Association, and other organizations to provide a inclusive environment for our families and children.

Check out these great websites in our neighbourhood:

School Garden Summer Blooms

Radishes in the garden
Dr. A.R. Lord  has maintained a garden since 2011 and is now in full summer bloom.  This garden was initially started with a grant from the Vancouver Foundation and partnerships with organizations such as Tree Canada, Environmental Youth Alliance, and the Vancouver Parks Board have allowed family volunteers, and teachers to give students the chance to learn about food, gardens, and sustainability.

Over the summer, even when school is out, the garden continues to bloom so we encourage Dr. A.R. Lord families to visit the garden.  Do some weeding, tend to the garden and help yourself to a little bit of the bounty (but please leave some for others).

What is in bloom?  We found Strawberries, radishes, and herbs such as chives and sage to name a few.

Mint in particular is in great supply so try a FRESH MINT INFUSION to drink (hot or cold).
  • Pick a few sprigs of fresh mint
  • Rinse to wash in fresh water
  • Take several leaves and put into a cup
  • Bruise or muddle the mint leaves with the back of of wooden spoon to release the mint oil
  • Top with boiling water and steep 5-10 minutes
  • Remove the leaves.  Add a little honey or sugar if you like.
  • Or try it cold on a hot day by bringing to cool and serve over ice.

Dr. A.R. Lord Booth at Hastings CC Canada Celebration

A.R. Lord Parent Advisory Committee hosted a booth at the recent Canada Day Celebrations at Hastings Community Centre.   Information about the school was showcased to the community and a craft table was set up for children to make Canada Day Book Markers.

Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped including ex-students from the Dr. A.R. Lord Alumni Association.   These previous graduates continue to support our school and demonstrate youth leadership and community involvement.   They are a strong testament to the wonderful individuals that pass through our school.  Additional thanks goes to the Hastings Community Association for providing the space and opportunity to join in on all of the festivities.
