Parent Workshops

Thursday Nov 20th was the first of a series of parent workshops.  Many A.R. Lord teachers and parents/caregivers attended the presentation on how to talk to your kids about drugs and alcohol.
Ms. Kristina Spring is an alcohol and drug youth worker, the presentation covered themes such as:
*What is a drug?
*What are the most common Drugs that your Kids will encounter
*Harmful impacts on children's brains and bodies that are still undergoing development

*Talking to kids about how drugs can impact their values and goals
*Helping children recognize the level of risk

*Talking to your child about the difference between medicinal marijuana vs. illegal drug use

Feedback from the attendees was that the relevance of the topic was remarkable, even for those with young children in the primary grades.  It provided parents with the tools to speak about drugs in a way that many had never thought about before.

Dr. A.R. Lord Kindergarten and Grade 1 students   were out enjoying the sunshine and crisp fall weather on a recent field trip to the neighbouring Hastings Park.  Their outing included playing in the fallen leaves, drawing plants, observing the local ducks in the pond, and walking in the natural surroundings of this beautiful urban park.  Children were tasked with drawing something "Cold", "Smooth" and something they could "Hear".

Literacy at Dr. A.R. Lord Elementary

A.R. Lord school is embracing early intervention in literacy as a way to kick start reading and writing for young learners. The Reading Recovery Program is overseen by Ms. Burke, the Resource/Reading Recovery Teacher.

The program is  a highly effective, short term intervention program of one-to-one tutoring for first graders who require some extra support to learn to read and write.  Reading Recovery is a supplement to good classroom teaching and AR Lord is one of the select schools under this Vancouver School Board Program.

"If your grade 1 child is identified as needing some extra support with learning to read and write, they may be taken into the Reading Recovery Program. Students receive a half hour one-to-one lesson each school day for 12 to 20 weeks with me, a specially trained Reading Recovery teacher.  Every lesson consists of familiar reading, letter activities, writing a sentence to take home and reading a new book.  Your child and I work hard to learn the complex skills of reading and writing and we have lots of fun too.  Your child will bring home 3-4 books to read every day and to cut up sentences to put back together and read, with a special word that we are working on.  I feel so lucky to do this work with children, we have the luxury of one on one time which is very rare in schools and we get to read great books and have lots of fun while we learn!"

Information for students and  resources for families are posted in the downstairs hallway.

See Link:  VSB Reading Recovery News and we hope that parents will continue to voice their support for special programs like this one.
