Field Trips at Dr. A.R. Lord Elementary

Field trips are a chance for students to get out of the classroom and into a new environment to develop practical skills and put learning into context. At A.R. Lord, parent/caregivers also often have the opportunity to participate with their children and assist or volunteer with the class on their outing.  Recent field trips for A.R. students include visits to local museums, nature parks, ecological centres, the courthouse, theatre productions, the symphony,  and amusement parks. Many field trips are supported through Parent Advisory Council Funds to offset costs. 

Staff, Teachers and Parent Volunteers - Lynn Canyon

Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre educators brought the rain forest habitat and forest creatures to life on a recent field trip. These Gr 1 & 2 students  were also accompanied by parent volunteers and teachers on a self guided hike through the park, collected specimens & learned about science & nature.

Film and Animation Workshop for Division 2 Class

Division 2 attended the Real 2 Real Film Festival for Youth at the Roundhouse Community Centre last month.  This hands on workshop includes instruction that is tailored for their age group. Students had the opportunity to watch a couple of short films and attend a great workshop on stop-motion animation. They learned how to develop, storyboard, and create their own short animated movies. Reel Focus includes a Film Study Guide with relevant information about the films and suggested discussion questions, activities and resources for teachers. http://www.r2rfestival.org/

Grade 5 and 6 Fun Day at Playland

Kanaka Creek Field Trip

Divisions 4 & 7 recently went on a field trip to Bell-Irving Fish Hatchery, located in the Kanaka Creek Regional Park in Maple Ridge.  
They were lead by educator Ross and learn about the optimal conditions for fish habitat in the water.  The students conducted field testing experiments and measured the temperature and pH of the water.

Division 4 Field Trip: HR McMillan Space Centre

 A.R. Lord Grade 3 & 4 students made a recent trip to the HR McMillan Space Centre.  The morning started off with a bus ride from the school over to the museum located in Kitsilano. They had a chance to walk through the exhibits and try on the space suit as well as watch the Star Theatre show on the solar system.  They learned about the Milky Way, the stars, the plants and the moon. 




They participated in the interactive "A Day in Space" presentation where they demonstrated how astronauts eat and have meals in a zero gravity environment.  

Funding for this field trip was paid in part by monies donated by the Parent Advisory Council through fundraising activities.  Additional classroom funds have been provided to each division to offset costs for extra educational materials, field trips and activities. 

Field Trip to Science World

Grades 4-7 recently went on a field trip to Telus World of Science.  The day started off with a trip on public transit to the museum. They visited the numerous exhibits and some classes watched the documentary movie in the Omnimax theatre titled: D-Day Normandy 1944. Students also carried out a science experiment onsite which involved the testing of acid pH of vitamin C.
Participation fees for the field trip were subsidized in part by the A.R. Lord Parent Advisory Council (PAC) fundraising efforts.  Thank you for your support in enhancing the learning opportunities for our students!

Forest and Wildlife Field Trip

Students learned about animals and habitats at a recent field trip to the Capilano River.  Darren of www.northwestwildlife.com led students on a guided walk and described characteristics of different animals. The young kindergarten and grade 1 students were able to get up close and touch bones, skulls and pelts of deer, bears, and birds. Activities such as this provide children with the opportunity to appreciate our natural environment and become future stewards of these precious ecosystems.

Field Trip to Capilano River Hatchery

Ms. Young's Kindergarten and Grade 1 Students from A.R. Lord braved the rainy weather and visited the Capilano River Hatchery in North Vancouver last week. They were lead by Issac, the Fisheries Technician with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, for a behind the scenes tour of the tanks and hatchery. He explained how they maintain and manage the salmon through the different stages of growth, and their release into the river.

Sunny Days

Science of Fun at Playland

Div 2 Students went to Playland Amusement Park for a recent field trip to learn about Science and Physics.  Since 1988, over 100,000 students from BC have participated.  Students were provided with a Playland Education Guide and learned about acceleration, friction, G-Force, estimation, Newton's Law of Motion and so much more! This field trip was also partially funded by the Parent Advisory Council.

Salmon Fry Release Field Trip

Division 3 and 6 visited Beaver Creek at Stanley Park for a recent field trip.  The older students from Ms. Watson's class assisted Ms. Young's class for the final step of the Salomonids in the Classroom Program.

They have been raising coho salmon eggs in a special school aquarium since January and have seen them grow into the alevin stage and into larger fry.  Equipment was purchased with a grant from the Environmental Managers Association of BC http://www.emaofbc.com.  As young aquatic stewards, the Kindergarten/ Grade 1 students have learned all about the salmon lifecycle and have now released the coho salmon fry into the wild.  These little fish will continue their journey and grow into smolts and then adults as they head out to the ocean and eventually return to spawn to lay more eggs.

Science Teaches A.R. Lord Kids about the World Around Them

Biodiversity, short for biological diversity, is the term used to describe the variety of life found on Earth and all of the natural processes. This includes ecosystem, genetic and cultural diversity, and the connections between these and all species. 

The different aspects of biodiversity all have a very strong influence on each other. We have only just started to understand the relationships between living things and their environments. It is helpful to think of an ecosystem as a woven carpet; if you pull on a loose thread it might only affect the thread and those closest to it or it might unravel the whole carpet.

Students from Dr. A.R. Lord had a chance to explore the biological collections at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum which not only houses collections, specimens and interesting displays, but is also a working research and teaching facility for the University of British Columbia.  Many parent volunteers joined the class on this fascinating field trip.

K-1 Students head off to UBC (Beaty Biodiversity Museum)

Ms. Young's division 6 class visit the Biodiversity Museum at UBC which  houses a biological collections on Friday January 16th. Key areas of this natural history museum include the entomological collection, tetrapods, marine invertebrates, the herbarium, fish and fossils.

The museum is home to largest blue whale skeleton in all of Canada.

Outdoor Playing, Exploring and Learning! LET'S GO OUTSIDE!

Dr. A.R. Lord Kindergarten and Grade 1 students   were out enjoying the sunshine and crisp fall weather on a recent field trip to the neighbouring Hastings Park.  Their outing included playing in the fallen leaves, drawing plants, observing the local ducks in the pond, and walking in the natural surroundings of this beautiful urban park.  Children were tasked with drawing something "Cold", "Smooth" and something they could "Hear".
