Field Trip to Science World
Grades 4-7 recently went on a field trip to Telus World of Science. The day started off with a trip on public transit to the museum. They visited the numerous exhibits and some classes watched the documentary movie in the Omnimax theatre titled: D-Day Normandy 1944. Students also carried out a science experiment onsite which involved the testing of acid pH of vitamin C.
Participation fees for the field trip were subsidized in part by the A.R. Lord Parent Advisory Council (PAC) fundraising efforts. Thank you for your support in enhancing the learning opportunities for our students!

Forest and Wildlife Field Trip
Students learned about animals and habitats at a recent field trip to the Capilano River. Darren of www.northwestwildlife.com led students on a guided walk and described characteristics of different animals. The young kindergarten and grade 1 students were able to get up close and touch bones, skulls and pelts of deer, bears, and birds. Activities such as this provide children with the opportunity to appreciate our natural environment and become future stewards of these precious ecosystems.

Important VSB Announcement - 2 Additional Pro D Days
For Parents,
As you may know, a new comprehensive curriculum for the K-12 system is being developed in BC. This work has been years in the making with teachers, administrators and the Ministry of Education involved in its development. At the present time, the curriculum for students in Grades K-9 is being piloted throughout the province. New curriculum for students in Grades 10-12 will be available for piloting in September 2016.
Earlier this fall the Ministry of Education and the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) announced a plan to support the ongoing implementation of the new curriculum. As part of this plan, districts have been asked to add two days of curriculum implementation time during the 2015-2016 school year. This time will be provided for teachers to continue to familiarize themselves with the new curriculum and to plan for its full implementation in the coming years.
In Vancouver, the following two days have been selected as our local non-instructional days for curriculum implementation:
Friday, March 4 and Friday April 15
Schools will not be in session for students on these two days.
We are pleased that teachers have been given this additional time to spend on this important work to serve your children better as we transition to the new curriculum.
Please contact your principal if you have any questions.

Student Library Contest
Have you heard?! If A.R. Lord Students read lots of library books, they could win a prize! It's easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy. All they have to to is borrow books from our library as regularly as possible (they can get new ones every day except Mondays!) and have a little luck on their side.
Ms. M has hidden little tickets in library books all throughout our collection. If students borrow a book, and find one while reading, they can bring the book and ticket back to Ms. M! She'll ask some questions about the book, and then the student will get to pick a prize! So far, twelve lucky students across all grades have found the special tickets.
And, because Ms. M is reaaaaaaaaaaaaaally nice, she re-hides the found tickets in different books... meaning there are so very many chances to win! The more they read, the luckier they get. Happy Reading, and...

Lest We Forget
Just one candle shining in a window pane
Give a light for all to see a shining flame,
Shining through the darkness,
It helps to show the way,
Light your candle for peace today
Shine your light for peace,
Shine it all around the world,
Sing to everyone,
Let your voice be heard,
Shine your light for peace,
Shine it everywhere,
Show the people in the world you care.

Field Trip to Capilano River Hatchery
Ms. Young's Kindergarten and Grade 1 Students from A.R. Lord braved the rainy weather and visited the Capilano River Hatchery in North Vancouver last week. They were lead by Issac, the Fisheries Technician with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, for a behind the scenes tour of the tanks and hatchery. He explained how they maintain and manage the salmon through the different stages of growth, and their release into the river.
