Turtles are Interesting to See and Draw

A friendly pet turtle and it's owner came for a visit to the school yard and A.R. Lord students got to watch it in action. All gathered around and they were fascinated by its shape, texture and movement.
Beautiful colourful turtle drawings can also be seen in the school hallway as a display of art projects.

Kindergarten Self Portraits

"Self portraits encourage children to slow down, observe, focus on detail and notice what they see when they look at themselves. It provides an opportunity for them to notice what is unique and special about themselves and others. It encourages risk taking and builds confidence. 

The children in division 7 spent time looking at themselves with mirrors and creating self-portraits with clay, pastels, paint, pen and paper, and loose materials. Each time, they were encouraged to look closely and see the parts that make up their face. The details in their self-portraits tell us how they see themselves and what they chose to emphasize in their drawings of themselves. 

Throughout the process, the children became more ware of themselves and others. The class also read the book "The Best Part of me" by Wendy Ewald. 

Using a variety of materials to build the self-portraits gave the children the opportunity to represent themselves in different ways. It provided them an opportunity to learn new skills and to learn more about the uniqueness of each material. Making self-portraits has helped he children to take a closer look at themselves and to think about how they are special, unique and beautiful. "

Recycle Art

Grade 3 and 4 Students had the chance to use their imagination and create art projects using recycled materials. They worked cooperatively in groups and transformed bottles, cardboard, paper, and other household/office materials. 

Thinking outside of the box and being innovative allows students to create unique pieces of art and is an environmentally friendly way to put to use items that would normally be thrown out. 

Making Portraits

Self Portraits drawn or painted by young students decorate the school hallways at A.R. Lord Elementary School.  These beautiful creations do double duty as they also provide an opportunity for others to learn the names and recognize other students.                                                        Some classes also do family portraits and this creates strong recognition of diversity, empathy & the understanding that people and families come in all colours, shapes & sizes! 

Spring Blossom Art

Art with the East Side Program Students

Grade 3/4 students from A.R. Lord had the chance to view and learn about art from older students at the next door East Side Program School. They started off the visit with a workshop making painted book markers. They then got a tour of the art drawings and paintings exhibit that were created by grade 9/10 students.
This collaboration creates a leadership opportunity for these teens as part of their curriculum which includes fine arts and community building. The younger kids had a wonderful time and also practiced their hand at creating art.

Lantern Making and Light, Water, Drums Festival

Primary students at A.R. Lord have been busy making decorated lanterns out of recycled materials such as jars and bottles. 

The Hastings North Community Partners Group, Hastings Community Centre/Templeton Pool and Hastings Community Association will be hosting the Light, Water, Drums Festival on Saturday January 23rd. It is a celebration of the dark, wet Vancouver winter in the beautiful natural setting at Hastings Park.  Join in on this free family fun activity and the light procession starting at 5:30pm at the NE Corner of Hastings and Renfrew. Year of the Sheep Artwork - Division 1

If you were born 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, or 2003 you are year of the Sheep (sometimes also referred to as goat or ram)Grade 6 and 7 students drew beautiful sheep pictures that symbolize this Chinese Zodiac sign.  

What are the characteristics of the Sheep?

Daydreaming all afternoon sounds heavenly to the Sheep. This creative, esoteric Sign needs plenty of time alone in which to feed its Muse. Sheep are generally most comfortable in their own minds (which other, more linear-thinking Signs may have trouble deciphering). In fact, Sheep tend not to be very materialistic in general, finding plenty of riches in their own imagination. However, especially when in love, the Sheep can be quite a lavish gift-giver. Appearances are also important to the Sheep, which may explain why these folks can spend hours primping and posing. Sheep would be well-served by learning to relax and let others run the show from time to time.

Creating with Clay

Rolling, Squishing, Squeezing, 

Pinching and Cutting! 
Why is playing with clay great for Dr. A.R. Lord students?  

Clay is a wonderfully responsive and tactile material to work with.  It's simplicity and immediacy appeals to even the youngest of children and satisfies their innate longing to touch the earth and work with their hands.  


Children become aware of structure, shape form and perspective through it's 3-D properties.  Working with clay brings many learning opportunities to children through experimentation.   They also learn to repair mistakes, innovate and adapt. 

.... but most importantly, playing with clay is FUN! 

Todd Parr Inspired Self Portraits by Div 5.

Ms. Bains' K-1 class continue on with the Todd Parr author study and painted colourful artwork that showcases the uniqueness of each child.  Todd Parr is a well known children's illustrator and author.

Ms. Watson's Class Winter Birds Artwork: Charley Harper

Dr. A.R. Lord's Division 3 class created beautiful Winter Birds artwork that was inspired by modern American Illustrator Charley Parker.

In a style he called "minimal realism", Charley Harper captured the essence of his subjects with the fewest possible visual elements. When asked to describe his unique visual style, Charley responded:  "When I look at a wildlife or nature subject, I don’t see the feathers in the wings, I just count the wings. I see exciting shapes, color combinations, patterns, textures, fascinating behavior and endless possibilities for making interesting pictures. I regard the picture as an ecosystem in which all the elements are interrelated, interdependent, perfectly balanced, without trimming or unutilized parts; and herein lies the lure of painting; in a world of chaos, the picture is one small rectangle in which the artist can create an ordered universe."

Code of Conduct Art Work

All Dr. A.R. Lord Students recently reviewed the school's code of conduct and their personal responsibility to uphold it.  Grade 5, 6 and 7 students illustrated words that described the code of conduct in every letter from A to Z and the artwork is displayed in the school hallway.  Check it out.

New Mural Artwork - Emergency Stores Container beside Dr. A.R. Lord

The old peach shipping storage container in the parking lot adjacent to Dr. A.R. Lord school has now been transformed into a beautiful new piece of public art.  This creation was coordinated by Hastings Community Centre and painted by artist Rachel Stableford.  It holds critical supplies in the event of a natural disaster such as an earthquake or other big emergency.

This container is part of a Vancouver City wide program to ensure that the Hastings Sunrise community is well prepared and would be able to respond quickly with less impact and harm.

GRADE 1 & 2 ARTWORK ON DISPLAY AT THE PNE

Keep your eyes sharp for this lovely artwork prepared by the grade 1&2 students in Ms. Phong Many and Ms. Bains's class.    It is on display at the PNE on the fence near the Playground area and just North of the Italian Gardens.
