Capilano Fish Hatchery Field Trip

Dr. A.R. Lord's Kindergarten and Grade 1 class started the first phase of a multi-faceted program to learn about salmon and the environment. Ms. Young's class activities included a wonderful field trip to the Capilano Fish Hatchery. They learned all about salmon, it's habitat and were given a behind the scenes tour of the hatchery. They viewed spawning salmon returning to the hatchery, salmon eggs and steelhead salmon. A walk in the surrounding forest was lead by Darren, an environmental educator with the Northwest Wildlife Preservation Society http://northwestwildlife.com/. Topics covered included the Capilano River, the dam and the rainforest. The children also had a chance to get up close and touch animal skulls, bear fur, and eagle eggs.

Upon returning to the school, each of the students drew and painted what they had seen and learned about on the field trip. Art supplies were purchased through a grant donated by the Environmental Manager's Association of BC http://www.emaofbc.com/. Additional activities for this program will continue on throughout the year ahead. Thank you to all those supporting our students at Dr. A.R. Lord!
