Field Trips at Dr. A.R. Lord Elementary

Field trips are a chance for students to get out of the classroom and into a new environment to develop practical skills and put learning into context. At A.R. Lord, parent/caregivers also often have the opportunity to participate with their children and assist or volunteer with the class on their outing.  Recent field trips for A.R. students include visits to local museums, nature parks, ecological centres, the courthouse, theatre productions, the symphony,  and amusement parks. Many field trips are supported through Parent Advisory Council Funds to offset costs.

NEWS RELEASE: FLAWED METHODOLOGY FOR CAPACITY CALCULATION

NEWS RELEASE July 14, 2016
Province’s skewed methodology for calculating capacity utilization makes schools appear empty
Students caught in budget battle between Province and school boards
Vancouver, B.C. – Parents of Dr. A.R. Lord Elementary School students are outraged by the budget battle between the Province and the Vancouver School Board, which threatens to close their vibrant neighbourhood school.
A.R. Lord is one of 11 East Vancouver schools targeted for possible closure based on the Province’s unrealistic target of 95-per-cent capacity utilization to receive funding for seismic upgrades and their mandated methodology to calculate that capacity utilization. The methodology, which is seriously flawed, makes schools appear empty when they are not.

The school community garden is a place of learning, sharing, collaborating and even some tasting!  Dr. A.R. Lord Teachers extend lessons beyond the classroom boundaries.  How do you define capacity? Outdoor learning gives kids a chance to learn about gardening, where food comes from, ecology and sustainability.
Students also love getting their hands dirty!

Some additional benefits of school gardens include:
  • Physical activity
  • Environmental stewardship and connection with nature
  • Lifestyle and nutrition
  • Active learning and student engagement
