Parent Advocacy Network Event

The Parent Advocacy Network(PAN) invites you to attend our event "Public Education Matters: Get Informed, Take Action!" to discuss education advocacy, voice your concerns and thoughts, and network with other Vancouver parents and education advocates. Hosted by our friends at Douglas PAC, this will also be an excellent opportunity to hear first-hand what is important to BC parents, and their issues and concerns regarding public education for their children - and more importantly to discuss how together we can all be more effective in our advocacy.

Wednesday August 31
7:00 - 8:30 pm
Douglas Elementary School (Gym)
2150 Brigadoon Street, Vancouver (Victoria Dr @61st St)

Our guest speaker will be Alex Hemingway, Policy Analyst from the BC office of the Canadian Center for Policy Alternatives(CCPA). His talk "What's the Real Story Behind BC's Education Funding Crisis" will focus on the background to this critical election issue, the impacts of policies and changes and the facts about the underfunding of public education. Despite provincial government claims that education funding is at record levels, according to the CCPA, funding has actually shrunk substantially as a share of BC's overall economic pie.

After our featured speakers, there will be an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and voice concerns. At the conclusion of the event, there will also be a networking session where you will have an opportunity to liaise with attendees. We have also invited VBE Trustees, elected officials (municipal, provincial, federal) and other stakeholder groups as supportive observers to hear and understand your concerns. The networking session is a great opportunity to be able to speak directly to them, as well as to liaise with other parents and advocacy groups.

Attached is our poster/invitation for the event; we encourage you to share and promote within your networks, on social media, and within your PACs and parent groups.

Terry Fox Run 2015

The sun was shining on Wednesday September 30th for the A.R. Lord Terry Fox Run which is part of the 35th National School Run Day.  This year it was held across the way at Hastings Park.  Teachers and students were joined by family and friends who donned their sneakers and ran along side!

A special guest Mr. Darrell Fox, the younger brother of Terry Fox was also present on site. In 1980 at the age of 17, he joined Terry on part of the Marathon of Hope. He now serves as a Board Director and Senior Advisor for the Terry Fox Research Institute. It was an honour for all to hear directly from a family member of Terry Fox and the importance to continue to support and fund the research that is leading to improve the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of Cancer.
Everyone got into the spirt of the event and learned about Terry Fox and his legacy!

APPLE DONATIONS NEEDED FROM YOUR TREES! APPLE GANZA

APPLE GANZA is a community small grants project that harvests apples from two trees in Callister Park just near the West side of the Colliseum and distributes to members of the community in September.

Unfortunately the production levels for the trees are low this year so they are looking for donations from local neighbours.  If you have an apple tree and can donate some apples for this year's event please contact: callisterapples@gmail.com

The harvest event is scheduled in September 13th and 14th with a subsequent potluck, canning and pie making workshops and celebrations at Hastings Community Centre.

Dr. A.R. Lord Booth at Hastings CC Canada Celebration

A.R. Lord Parent Advisory Committee hosted a booth at the recent Canada Day Celebrations at Hastings Community Centre.   Information about the school was showcased to the community and a craft table was set up for children to make Canada Day Book Markers.

Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped including ex-students from the Dr. A.R. Lord Alumni Association.   These previous graduates continue to support our school and demonstrate youth leadership and community involvement.   They are a strong testament to the wonderful individuals that pass through our school.  Additional thanks goes to the Hastings Community Association for providing the space and opportunity to join in on all of the festivities.
